For a few days in 1990 the small town of Monterey, Massachusetts found itself the center of national attention. Monterey was chosen to represent the Commonwealth in an International Energy Conservation Contest – to see which of a 13 New England and Canadian towns could see the most electricity over one weekend.
“Monterey Lights The Way” is a television documentary that captures that brief period of purpose and possibility as people from different places, with greatly varying points of view find common ground.
“Monterey Lights The Way” features Millie Walsh, the Monterey Fire Company, Ray Tryon, Rev. Virgil Brallier, Peter Murkett and Michele Miller and Mickey Friedman.
It was shot by John MacGruer and co-produced and directed by Mickey Friedman and John MacGruer. It was funded in part by The Massachusetts Foundation for the Humanities and Public Policy. It was a co-production of WGBY-TV and aired on PBS stations.
